one big long TV rant
Okay, so I'm thinking about hunting down Joss Whedon and beating his kneecaps in with a lead pipe. And then smacking him upside the head, just for good measure. It would be extremely gratifying if little cartoon birdies circled around and around as well. Because tonight's Angel? That was just... cruel.
Non-fans should probably tune out or close this window right now, because I doubt I'll talk about much else. Sorry. In incensed.
Tonight, to honor Angel's 100th episode, they brought back Cordelia. Now, I know a lot of people don't like Cordy. Joe hates her. And I can see that. But I've always loved her to bits, from Sunnydale High Cordy to Angel's Sassy Sidekick Cordy and straight on through to Evil Cordy. I did think the latter was unnecessary and kind of lame, but I still loved her. And then they went and left her in that stupid coma for the first half of this season, a move which, I think, was very stupid. Angel's cast is heavily male. Even with Cordy, there were twice as many guys. Now it's just Fred, and while I do like Fred, her character just isn't female lead material.
So tonight they woke Cordy up from her beauty-coma, and I was all WEEEE! 'Cause she was zippy and funny and put Eve in her place like no one else has had the balls to. And then they tell us that she never woke up at all! It was higher power goodness, allowing Cordy to make one last appearance before they KILLED HER OFF.
I was spoiled for it, but fucking hell. I'm still mad. And yes, I do realize that it's silly to be mad a TV show, but I'm a socially inept loser and as such I tend to get attached. And Angel has gone serious downhill this season, due in large part, in my opinion, to the lack of Cordelia. And now she's GONE, in that really dead way where she probably won't ever be back. And that's just... wrong. And stupid. And angry-making. And I have started all but one sentence in this paragraph with "And," which seems a bit excessive and also grammatically incorrect. But I do not care because this, my friends, is a rant.
Also, that arc with Lindsay? Was incredibly lame. I used to like Lindsay, and I find it quite irritating that they brought him back this way. When he left in season 2, he didn't seem to have any real grudge against Angel or even Wolfram & Hart. But now he's suddenly Mr. Revenge? Over what? And they made him sleep with Eve. Uugghghg. There are no words for how much I wanted to puke every time those two were half-naked on screen together. It was worse than the Cordy/Angel smooching, and I've never been a fan of that.
However, I did like it. Cordy brought some much-needed snark, Angel seems to be in a better place, and they actually gave Wes something to do. And now everyone hates Eve as much as I do, which is happy-making. Also, Spike was playing Donkey Kong. He totally was. Except that he was playing it on an Xbox, which, unless I'm mistaken, is improbable if not impossible. It would have been much cooler if he'd been "kicking it old school" with the 8-bit Nintendo.
I believe my favorite exchange of the evening was between Cordy and Spike, and went something like:
Spike: (after biting Cordy) I thought she didn't have a soul.
Cordy: Yes I do!
Spike: Well so do I.
Cordy: Well mine is clearly better.
I don't know. It was all in the delivery.
Next week: Nazi Spike. Now, I realize that vampire characters with the life spans that Angel and Spike have (240+ and 120+, respectively) will have colorful histories. And I realize also that, in writing them, new and interesting bits of back story will be worked in every now and then. But Spike working with the Nazis? Makes no sense. He's not historically a fan of authority or following orders, both of which the Nazis were all about. I don't find it in character that he'd be someone's lackey like that, not even Hitler's. So, whatever. I guess I'll just see how it plays out, but as of now I have to officially say that it looks stupid.
And on the non-Angel front, I learned today that my little brother is firmly entrenched in the dating scene. This is very disturbing to me.
That is all.
