some things are just lost on me
Okay, so... am I like the only person on the planet who didn't really like
Lost in Translation? Because everyone is raving about it. Adam and I saw it at the Midtown Cinema, and while I did enjoy the Japanese scenery and Scarlett Johansson is cute (color me jealous, indeed), I didn't think it was the greatest movie ever. In fact, I was pretty bored through most of it. So maybe I'm missing something, or maybe everyone else is just insane. Or maybe I'm insane. 1 and 3 are probably the most viable options.
So. We do a lot of workshopping in my creative writing class - that's sort of the whole point. Well, the really, really stupid woman has a story up to bat this week, and she emailed it out over the weekend for everyone to read and prepare comments on. Normally I quite like this process, because I can either read a good story and like it or read a crappy story and mark the hell out of my copy. However, this woman - who, may I just repeat, is ridiculously dim - wrote a story about shooting a 10-point buck. And it was in my inbox. And I have to read it before class tonight and find something good to say about it. Which I really don't want to do, because, hey. Longtime vegetarian who thinks hunting is evil and will probably cry while reading the damn story. Granted, I'll be hating through the tears, but still. So I find myself in a bit of a fix. As much as I do personally dislike hunters, I'm not the type to be outwardly mean or rude to them - it's not my style. So what do I say to this woman?
"Oh, hey, I really liked your story! It was so well written that I felt like I was right there with you, slaughtering an innocent animal for fun! Go you! Now if you'll please excuse me, I need to go vomit and then shower."
Um, no. And it's not even well written, so that would be a big fat lie. Gah. Maybe I should write a story about an animal rights activist going all disgruntled postal worker and massacring a bunch of people in the meats section of the grocery store, and then send it out for critiques. Ha!
Aww, I got a valentine's day card from Amanda today. I miss my lesbian. I need to stick a post-it note up someplace to remind me to send her the package I have in the works.
Anyway - duty calls. And by "duty" I mean Angel and a fresh glass of water. Ciao.
