pencils: all the better to poke people with
Have I mentioned that I hate ink wash? Of all the media we worked with in Drawing last semester, I liked ink wash the least. I think it can be gorgeous when done well, but since I can't do it well I just hate it. Same goes for watercolors, and, well, just about all paint-like things. It's a brush issue, I'm convinced. I don't mind doing ink paintings with a stick, but a brush is just... unpleasant. A lack of control thing, maybe. I like my mark-making implements to have sharp points and firm edges - soft hair on the end of a stick just doesn't do it for me. Anyway, I suck at it.
So guess what we did in class tonight? Ink wash! For 3 hours! It was really, really boring! And everyone was way better than me! Woo! And guess what I get to do for homework this week? Ink wash! Still life! Two things that I don't like, fused into one! Woooooo!
Okay, so I'm not exactly thrilled about it. Shawn (the prof) was telling me that I'm very subtle with the build-up and layering of tones, and that I should allow myself 6 to 8 hours to really get a satisfactory result. To which I replied: dude, back the fuck off. If you really think I'm going to spend a third of my day painting a stupid still life in a media that I despise, then you are truly in need of medication. Well, I didn't quite say that. There was less swearing and more dubious looks, but the message was conveyed just as well.
But we did listen to Eric Clapton for most of the class, so that was a nice bonus. Or a band-aid stuck over the gaping wound - take your pick.
So all I did today was draw and write a little and draw some more in class and send Prof Wallace a story and draw yet again and eat chocolate. Because my life is a beautiful tapestry, full and rich and exciting. Or, well, not. But at least there's chocolate involved, right?
