"reck" and "ruth" get their revenge
Huh. You know my whole issue with "reckless" and how it doesn't make sense? Well, my friends... I have been thwarted. Observe:
reck
tr. & intr.v. recked, recking, recks
To take heed of or to have caution.
"Reck" is a word. How did I not know this? I'm the Vocabulary Queen, the High Mistress of Merriam-Webster, the Grande Dame of Wordiness... and I have never heard that word used in my life. I've never even read it anywhere. My world is all askew.
And even worse, I was thinking about "ruthless" when I was driving home today. "That doesn't make sense either," I though, annoyed. So after looking up "reck," I looked up "ruth."
ruth
n.
1. Compassion or pity for another.
2. Sorrow or misery about one's own misdeeds or flaws.
What the hell? What boulder were these words hiding under that I've never heard them used before? Now I feel all stupid and stuff. It's no fun. And I've lost one of my favorite ranting points! Which I think upsets me more than feeling stupid, for some reason.
Grr, argh. That's all I can say about that.
