fear and/or respect the majestic sphinges
I discovered tonight that there are two plural forms of the word sphinx: sphinxes (duh) and (hello, random) sphinges. What the hell? Where does that come from? That word is not pleasant to pronounce. Sfin-jez. It sounds Swedish. Color me perplexed.
I discovered that interesting tidbit during Creative Writing tonight, because the poem that we were workshopping used "sphinx" as the plural of "sphinx," like "deer" is the plural of "deer." We wondered if this was correct. I was the first to spot a dictionary, so I got to be Research Gal. Sphinges: the funniest word I'd heard all week. Probably the funniest word anyone has heard all week. I mean, it's damn funny. Just say it a few times and you'll realize.
Aww, I love that class. I'm definitely taking the second installment (heh) with the same prof. next semester, no matter how anything else turns out. He was rather a poohead tonight, though; I turned in a short story last week - the first short story that I've ever actually completed - and he wants to workshop it next week. Because it's fun to throw my lame beginning attempts at short story writing to the vicious, blood-thirsty dogs who will surely maul it to death as I sit in the corner and cry. Ahem. No, it won't be that bad. I hope. But still... I wouldn't have chosen this one. It's too new.
In other news, I am freezing my toes off. It's a whopping 40 degrees out tonight, and being that my bedroom has no real climate control outside of the tiny air conditioner, I can do nothing but put on my fleece pants and monkey slippers and hope that none of the little guys succumb to frostbite during the night. I don't like my toes, but that doesn't really mean that I want them to fall off or anything. Bleh.
I finally got the yarn to finish Adam's hat today. FINALLY. It's been 16,000 years since I ran out. I'm hoping to finish it tonight, and then possibly start on a hat from Hip To Knit, if I can find some way to make gauge. I will update the knitting page at some point, I promise. I need to borrow Joe's digital camera and click away. Woo.
Anyway. I'm cold, tired, and strangely hungry. I don't have to get up until 10 or 11 tomorrow - excellent. So I'm going to go watch TV (or Buffy/Angel if nothing good is on) and knit away. Happy something or other.
